Fuel tanks

Fuel tanks

All classic cars have one on board: a fuel tank. Often large, awkward, rusty, clumsy and heavy things, which, due to their filled weight, greatly affect the driving experience.

Just imagine carrying an extra 80 kg in a classic car – that immediately affects driving and braking performance. To reduce the weight somewhat, you could opt for an aluminium fuel tank. These are lighter than the steel version and have the major advantage of not rusting. It is no coincidence that aluminium fuel tanks are used in classic car racing and motor racing.

In addition to built-in tanks, there is also a category of classic cars that have fuel tanks located at the rear of the car. Think of the large old Bentleys and MGs from the 1940s and 1950s. It is virtually impossible to find good used parts for these cars, so choosing a new aluminium tank is a reliable and relatively quick solution. We provide an exact copy of the original tank and finish it in the correct manner. We also make custom aluminium fuel tanks for motorcycles and custom bikes.

Craftmanship down to the last detail midi.jpeg

Welding, riveting and folding aluminium for fuel tanks is a skill in itself. Aluminium has a very short melting point: once it reaches the right temperature, the material quickly becomes unmanageably soft. This requires a steady hand and years of experience. In our workshop, we have the knowledge and the machines (such as cutting and bending machines) to process aluminium sheeting in all possible shapes and sizes.

What we do with aluminium tanks can, of course, also be achieved for oil reservoirs or reservoirs for brake and power steering systems. Please feel free to contact us to discuss how we can provide your classic car with safe, lightweight and, above all, leak-proof fluid storage.

Our expertise in the use of materials

At Radboud Restoration, we know better than anyone how aluminium should be used in classic cars. It is a fantastic material to work with, but it requires specialist knowledge. Aluminium is not classified as a “precious” metal. When aluminium comes into direct contact with metals such as steel (sheet metal) or stainless steel (bolts and nuts), corrosion can occur due to differences in electrical conductivity. Aluminium does not rust like steel, but it can oxidise and eventually corrode. To prevent this, we always ensure a durable separation between the materials by applying a non-conductive plastic strip, ring or coating.
